Last month at Gammon Village I posted the "Singing The Blues Quiz," a set of problems from the Chicago Open. Last week Phil Simborg wrote to me, saying that one of his students had rolled out a couple of my positions, and his answers did not match mine.

In Chicago we have a very active group of Open Players who enjoy killing a little of their spare time every afternoon playing chouette. But we spend much time debating on the right play amd trying to convince our partners to make our play.

GammonLife Newsletter

Greetings GammonLife Newsletter Subscribers!

After being away in Costa Rica for more than three years (taking care of personal family affairs) I am back in Canada and starting to add new articles and other material to GammonLife.com.

I am
now also a consultant to GammonPower.com, a new backgammon server being developed and that is expected to launch in 2011. You can read about the many features the software will have at www.gammonpower.com. What I like most about GammonPower is that they will have chouette, online qualifiers to live tournaments and a very low rake. Players will also be able to play money games and matches for micro-limits, as low as 10 cents.

GammonPower will be giving away, to the first 1,000 players that pre-register, a small amount of free cash to play with, as well as entries to free-roll tournaments, so go to www.gammonpower.com and submit your name and email address to be eligible for the free stuff. I hope you will be with me to party on the day GammonPower launches.

The Backgammon Pentathlon
03 May 2011  -  by Douglas Zare

Backgammon match play is like a pentathlon from track and field. An athlete training for a pentathlon usually concentrates on one of the five events at a time, perhaps running one time, and then throwing a javelin another.

Reductionism is the Key to Understanding Backgammon
20 Apr 2011  -  by Phil Simborg

The reductionism process applies to understanding the deeper, underlying reasoning behind all of our backgammon decisions. Like the scientist, conduct blind studies and experiments and see if you can truly find a direct cause and effect.

Mythbusters 4: Midpoint
25 Apr 2011  -  by Stick

This month's myth to be potentially busted is 'Don't break the midpoint'. We all know at some point the midpoint has to go or we'd get gammoned every game but under what circumstances is it ok to let go of that point?

29 Mar 2011  -  by Ashutosh Dalvi

I am not good at mental arithmetic. So, I have tried to devise something easier. I noticed that in almost every pip count, I would be multiplying by 13 at some stage due to checkers on the mid point. This gave me an idea. I'm calling it "The Ash Dalvi 13 Count".

Post-Crawford Redoubles
01 Apr 2011  -  by Douglas Zare

A lot of match equity is at stake in each game after the Crawford game, and also on large cubes, but the backgammon literature says little about the intersection of these situations. This column fills that appropriate gap.
